Surface temperature is mostly determined at specification time, and it is easy to get right if you decide before the pour rather than after.
What makes a deck hot
Colour, above everything
Dark surfaces absorb solar radiation; light ones reflect it. The temperature difference between a dark grey deck and an off-white one in full Texas sun is large enough that one is comfortable and the other is not.
If you take one thing from this: go light. Off-white, pale tan, light grey, sand. A dark charcoal deck will look wonderful in photographs and be unusable half the day.
Density and thermal mass
A dense, smooth, sealed surface holds heat. A more open, textured surface sheds it faster and puts less contact area against your foot at any moment.
Shade and orientation
Obvious but often ignored at design stage. A pergola, a wide eave or a well-placed tree over the main walking route changes the experience more than any coating.
Finishes ranked for a Katy pool deck
Cool-deck coating — coolest
A textured acrylic-cement coating applied over the concrete. Designed specifically for this problem, it is noticeably cooler than bare concrete, gives good wet grip and comes in light colours.
It needs recoating every several years and it can wear at high-traffic points. For a deck that gets heavy barefoot use, it is still the most reliable answer.
Light exposed aggregate — excellent all round
Light stone, open texture, best-in-class slip resistance, and it hides the staining that pool decks accumulate. Choose a smaller aggregate so it is comfortable underfoot.
Broom finish in a light colour — the sensible default
Inexpensive, good grip, no maintenance beyond cleaning. Not as cool as a coating but perfectly workable in a light colour.
Stamped — attractive, needs care
Fine if you keep the colour light and insist on a grit additive in the sealer. Sealed stamped concrete without grit is genuinely slippery when wet, which is the wrong property beside a pool.
Smooth trowel finish — avoid
Slick when wet and hot in sun. Not suitable here.
The things that are not about heat
Drainage
The deck must slope away from the pool, typically around a quarter inch per foot, so splash-out and rain carry debris away rather than into the water. In Katy’s rainfall, a deck that drains toward the pool also means a pool chemistry problem every storm.
Deck drains or a channel drain are worth it where the yard does not allow enough fall.
Expansion joints at the pool shell
This one causes expensive damage when it is skipped. The deck and the pool structure move independently, especially on expansive clay. A compressible expansion joint between them — not a rigid mortar joint — lets that happen without cracking the deck or the coping.
Check yours. If there is a hard grout line where the deck meets the coping, it will crack.
Control joints
Same rules as any slab, cut at sensible spacing so shrinkage cracks land where you chose.
Soil movement
Pool decks settle in Katy for the same reason everything else does. A settled deck can usually be lifted rather than replaced — see concrete leveling.
If you already have a hot deck
You are not stuck with it. Options in rough order of cost:
- Add shade. A sail or pergola over the main route is cheap and immediate.
- Apply a cool-deck coating over the existing concrete, provided the slab is sound.
- Resurface with a lighter, textured overlay. See resurfacing.
- Replace, if the deck is failing structurally anyway.
The coating route is the usual answer and it addresses heat and slip resistance in one step.

Meaningfully cooler than bare concrete in the same colour, and the texture reduces contact area as well. It is not cold — nothing in full Texas sun is — but it moves a deck from unusable to comfortable.
Can I just paint my deck a lighter colour?
Ordinary paint on a pool deck peels and gets slippery. Use a product made for the purpose.
How long does a cool-deck coating last?
Several years before recoating, less in heavy-traffic areas. Recoating is straightforward.
